Walking the Dogs at the Humane Shelter

Have you ever wanted to do something that is totally unselfish? Can you? If you can, then contact the Memphis/Shelby County Humane Shelter and see how you can improve the life of the dogs at the Shelter. They have dog walking groups that meet at different times of the day on different days of the week. Some are morning groups, some are evening groups.
All groups walk all of the sheltered dogs each time they meet. You can simply take your dog to one of the play yards along with the other dogs in the same kennel. If you want to walk farther, you can take your dog on an almost half mile walk, across a nearby grassy field.
Whatever dog you choose the dog will appreciate your kindness. And, you get to walk anywhere from 8 to 14 dogs, depending on how many dog walkers show up and how many dogs are in the shelter.
How long does it take. We have never been there more than 3 hours. We go on Saturday mornings and a lot of times we're finished in 2 or 2.5 hours.

If you're interested contact the Humane Shelter. All you have to do is attend a short informational meeting on a Saturday morning and then you're all set to walk. You will have to purchase a yellow "Dog Walker" t-shirt or hooded sweat shirt and a Humane Shelter leash. You will get to interact with various breeds of dogs with differing personalities. I was actually quite pleased at how well behaved and mild mannered they are. However, they do get excited when first taken outside but calm down pretty quickly.

If you choosed to walk across the field you have to take a plastic grocery bag, supplied by the Humane Shelter, and pick up you-know-what and bring it back. :)
